Think Twice Think carefully about whether you want to apply for a credit card or not, as the increased flexibility also involves additional costs. |
Annual Fees
Different credit cards have different annual fees. There are even cards which charge no fees. The fee level depends on which bank or organization issues your card, which type of card (gold or silver) you choose and what benefits the card offers. Therefore you can’t just compare the fees side by side. Here is a rough indicator of fee levels:
| Annual Fee | First Year | Following years |
| Standard card | CHF 0-140 | CHF 100-150 |
| Gold card | CHF 85-300 | CHF 170-300 |
| Platinum card | CHF 250-650 | CHF 500-650 |
Important to know: There are also now credit cards which don’t charge annual fees, for example Migros's M…MasterCard and Coop’s SUPERCARDplus MasterCard.
Additional credit cards always charge higher fees than your first card. In addition, you must pay fees for cash withdrawal at ATMs, for using your card abroad, paying by installments and to replace a lost card.
Withdrawing Cash
If you withdraw cash from an ATM using your credit card, it will cost you between 2.5% and 4% of the withdrawn amount, depending on the type of card you have, or at least CHF 5. When abroad, this will usually cost you at least CHF 10.
Payments in Foreign Currency
If you use your credit card to make payments in a foreign currency (for example paying for a meal abroad or booking online in Euro etc.), you will pay fees of between 0.5% and 2.5%. There may also be differences between the exchange rates used by credit card companies.
Interest
