Used Internationally

The Maestro card is often used as a means of payment. It is always linked to a particular bank account.

General Information

The Maestro card allows you to withdraw money from ATMs worldwide, and in more and more places you can use it to shop without using cash. When you open a personal account with a bank, you can usually apply for a Maestro card. Your personal withdrawal limit (monthly or daily) will be set by the bank according to your income. Each purchase or withdrawal is debited directly from your bank account.

PIN Code

The Maestro card uses chip and PIN technology. Every purchase or cash withdrawal must be confirmed by entering your PIN. However, if your card is lost or stolen you should always call the card provider to have it blocked.

Fees

Every year you pay a fee of between CHF 20 and 40 for your Maestro card and it can cost up to CHF 55 to have it blocked, depending on your bank. If you withdraw money at an ATM belonging to a different bank you usually pay a fee – you can save money by avoiding this. Fees will be higher when you withdraw money or make purchases abroad.
